Indian Head massage is a therapeutic treatment which is based on Ayurvedic medicine. It originated in India many centuries ago and is used to release tension & stress found in our muscles.

Indian head massage should be avoided if you have had recent surgery, or a head or neck injury; a history of thrombosis or embolism; spondylitis or spondylosis. Indian head massage is particularly good for reducing the effects of stress and tension. Since birth, every human has an individual combination of the three Doshas (life forces): Pitta, Vata and Kapha. We all have a mixture of these Doshas within us and our "Dosha type" is extremely important in Ayurvedic medicine. These three elements determine our constitution and allow us to maintain our health and wellbeing, through balance and harmony.

Pitta Dosha

The Pita Dosha is made up of the elements of fire and water. Pitta is known as a fiery, intense dosha. It takes on characteristics such as heat and sharpness from fire and fluidity and oiliness from water. Pita predominantly governs metabolism - controlling hormones, digestion, appetite and skin condition.

Vata Dosha

The Vata Dosha contains the properties of the elements ether and air. Air provides characteristics such as dryness and mobility, while ether makes it subtle and light. Vata is responsible for our energy and movement as well as for nerve impulses. Our breath, speech, circulation, and digestion are all the manifestation of Vata.

Kapha Dosha

Kapha's elements are earth and water. The qualities included in Kapha are heaviness and stability from earth and oiliness and smoothness from water.  Kapha gives the body substance, strength and cohesion and governs all structure, lubrication, and immunity. It is also responsible for healing.

Utilising the knowledge of Ayurveda in the modern world can be an incredibly rewarding way to naturally balance your health and wellbeing. Through Ayurveda we can learn to recognise the qualities that lie within us, enabling us to understand and act upon any potential health issues by looking at the root cause of a problem rather than the symptom.

Taking on board the Ayurvedic principle of  “Like increases like and opposites attract balance”, there are many things we can do to stop dis-ease manifesting into disease and improving the way we live and function as humans.
